Miller (1982), for example, suggested that three clear transgressions have taken place during the last 5000 14 C years, whereas the curve by Risberg et al (1991) indicates that after the major Litorina transgression at 7500-7000 14 C BP, only one transgression has occurred at 4500-3800 14 C BP, i.e., at the same time that Ormträsket was isolated. Assuming that the dates for Ormträsket are correct, the isolation of the lake strongly indicates that the relative sea level on the 30 m Litorina isobase (and in the areas of higher land uplift) was clearly regressive at that time, as no isolation could have taken place if the sea level was transgressive or even at standstill.…”

ISSN 0300-9483.Lake isolation studies provide the most reliable method for reconstructing the shore displacement history of the areas affected by postglacial isostatic land uplift. Due to the slow uplift rate and the presence of numerous lakes, the Finnish south coast is one of the key areas for investigating the Litorina transgression and subsequent shore displacement history of the Baltic. To reconstruct the relative sea-level dynamics during the late Holocene, three small lakes from the critical altitudes were analysed concerning their diatom, sulphate-sulphur, and sodium stratigraphies and loss-on-ignition values. Comparisons of the records indicate that the availability of nutrients significantly influenced the diatom-floristic patterns during the lake isolation. In particular, the mass occurrence of Fragilaria spp. seems to be associated with high values of sulphate-sulphur and sodium during and after isolation. On the basis of the new and old data, a shore displacement curve for the 30 m Litorina isobase is compiled. This indicates that since the clear Litorina transgression at 7500-6500 14 C BP, no transgressions have taken place but that the shore displacement in the area has been a stable process. The occurrence of a number of raised shore formations between the altitude of the major Litorina shore and the present sea level in south Finland can be attributed to the erosion of soft soil layers by the high-energy wave action on the exposed shore sections.

Laminated sediments from Lake Sågsjön, situated east of Stockholm, were used to study the last 1000 years history of the lake. A combination of 14 C dated (AMS) terrestrial macrofossils and annually laminated sediments were used, together with diatom stratigraphy, to determine the age of the isolation from the Baltic Sea. The laminae were counted using greyscale analysis and studied in detail by thin sections. Three new pair of laminae were formed between 1993 and 1996, indicating that the laminae are annually formed as varves. This is further supported by studies of thin sections, which reveal organic and minerogenic layers reflecting summer algae bloom and spring flood, respectively. Two of the 14 C dated macrofossils are interpreted as redeposited wheras the calibrated ages received from two leaf fragments are believed to represent the age of sediment deposition. According to the varve counting, Lake Sågsjön (2.0 m a.s.l.) was isolated from the Baltic Sea between AD 1500 and 1600. The two radiocarbon dated leafs give an isolation age between AD 1150 and 1400. Compared to the 14 C dates, the laminae based chronology yields too young ages, which indicates that the deposition of the laminae was not continuous. Shortly after the isolation the rate of sediment accumulation increases, which most probably is an effect of increased erosion when the catchment area was partly brought under cultivation.
