Elastic optical networks (EONs) have emerged to provide higher spectrum efficiency than traditional Dense Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing (DWDM) by utilizing enabling technologies such as flexible spectrum grid, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), and distance adaptive rate and modulation. The choice of the control-plane is an important consideration when deploying any new technology, especially in optical networks. This paper considers generic distributed and centralized spectrum assignment policies in conjunction with the accompanying connection set-up signaling protocols in EONs. A network simulator for Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) was developed with Forward Reservation Protocol and Backward Reservation Protocol signaling methods. These signaling techniques are used with the First Fit (FF) and Random Fit (RF) Routing and Spectrum Allocation (RSA) algorithms. The paper discusses control elements (central and distributed architectures) decisions under busy hour and normal network conditions and presents a comprehensive performance analysis of key performance metrics such as connection success rate, connection establishment time, and capacity requirement.

As redesópticas elásticas surgiram com o objetivo de lidar com o grande crescimento de tráfego de dados na Internet, utilizando os recursos da rede de forma eficiente. A eficiência acontece a partir da utilização da tecnologia Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, que permite a divisão do espectro em intervalos de frequência denominados slots. Para o estabelecimento de um caminhoóptico nas redes elásticas,é necessário a definição de uma rota e de um intervalo de espectro. Com o estabelecimento e encerramento dos circuitos em um cenário dinâmico, surge o problema da fragmentação, que impossibilita o atendimento de novas requisições. Para mitigar este problema, algoritmos de desfragmentação são executados com periodicidade. Neste trabalho,é proposto uma análise do algoritmo Dijkstra com e sem a utilização de desfragmentação, a fim de avaliar os benefícios relacionadoàs métricas de probabilidade de bloqueio de circuito, probabilidade de bloqueio de banda, fragmentação externa e utilização do espectro em duas topologias de rede distintas. Por fim, foi analisado também o consumo energético dos cenários. Palavras-chave-Redesópticas elásticas, desfragmentação do espectro, realocação de circuitos, algoritmo RMLSA.

Abstract-In most cases defragmentation occurs, in elastic optical networks, in the links between the network's nodes. In this article, defragmentation in an elastic optical network's node is investigated. The W-S-W switching architecture has been used as a node. A short description of a purpose-built simulator is introduced. Several methods of defragmentation which are implemented in this simulator are described as well.
