With rapid urbanization and industrial development, waste discharges in west centralTunisia have multiplied. The focus here is on the waste manifestation from the National Company of Cellulose and Alfa Paper (SNCPA), which has been considered as a serious pollutant affecting natural resources as surface and groundwaters, human health and hygiene in the Kasserine land of semi-arid climate. In order to preserve the quality assurance of available groundwater and determine its suitability for domestic an agricultural needs, a hydrogeochemical analysis was carried out to 30 samples for water samples taken from various source points of the study area ( 2018). This study attempt to assess the hydrogeochemical characteristics and ionic concentration with respect to WHO (2017) and Tunisian (NT.09.14) standards in the El Arich aquifer, in association with multivariate-statistical-analysis. Also DRASTIC model index was integrated with geographical information system (GIS) tools for the evaluation of the aquifer vulnerability to pollution. Results highlighted that only 17.65% of the groundwater samples are suitable for consumption purposes based on TDS, EC, Na + , K + , SO 4 2-, and F -.The modeling of equilibrium geochemical processes elucidated that the groundwater's along flow-paths are mostly in the oversaturated condition with respect to carbonate minerals, but they are undersaturated with evaporatic minerals. Based on some prespecified criteria and the validation by the water quality risk indices for soil salinization, the final vulnerability map shows four classes of vulnerability: very high, high, moderate, and low, depending on the intrinsic properties. HCA and FA suggest that high mineralization were related to rock-water interactions and anthropogenic impact from the effluents discharged by the SNCPA. This multidisciplinary analysis would provide an overview for decision making authorities to take necessary action for the sustainable management and future planning in groundwater resource.

[fr] La région de Bir M’Chergua sise à cinquante kilomètres de la capitale Tunis constitue un pôle économique important en Tunisie. Cependant la pénurie en eau résultante de la succession de nombreuses périodes de sécheresse a généré une notable dégradation de diverses activités industrielles, touristiques et agricoles dans cette région. L’exploitation des eaux souterraines peut pallier à cette situation mais elle nécessite une meilleure caractérisation des aquifères. Dans ce contexte, est réalisée la présente étude qui vise à apporter des précisions au schéma hydrogéologique de la région de Bir M’Chergua en déterminant la structuration profonde à partir de l’interprétation des données gravimétriques. Des cartes d’anomalie résiduelle, de la dérivée verticale et du gradient horizontal total sont calculées à partir de l’anomalie de Bouguer pour identifier et délimiter les sources perturbatrices. La technique de déconvolution d’Euler est aussi appliquée pour estimer la profondeur de ces sources. La carte structurale issue de l’interprétation gravimétrique permet de mettre en évidence des structures enfouies et des discontinuités de différentes directions et profondeurs qui peuvent influencer énormément la géométrie et le fonctionnement du système aquifère de Bir M’Chergua. En effet, la mise en évidence des accidents tectoniques profonds de plus de 1500 m aux alentours du Dôme du Jebel Oust permet d’expliquer l’origine et la forte salinité des eaux thermales dans ce secteur; les accidents ont favorisé une pénétration profonde des eaux de recharge ainsi que leur contact avec les terrains triasiques.

The Triassic salt dome/ripple ceiling and the Lower Turonian anhydrite Beida distribution are the main geological research objectives in central Tunisia. 2D seismic interpretation and outcrop studies show the thickness and the facies variations of the Turonian deposits identified along the structures recognised in the Gafsa area. Sedimentary distribution in the sub-basin and on the platform zones of the Gafsa plain is controlled by the WNW-ESE salt-intruded Gafsa corridor, the north-south Sidi Ali Ben Aoun and NE-SW Sidi Aı ¨ch master strike-slip faults. The conventional seismic velocity enables the extraction of an iso-velocity section that allows us to follow the Sehib-Berda salt-intruded ceiling identified in the Turonian deposits. The interval velocity map was helpful to predict the facies nature and, therefore, to delineate the Lower Turonian anhydrite Beida Formation that filled a local part of the northern Gafsa plain and does not exceed the Sidi Aı ¨ch fault to the north and the Sidi Ali Ben Aoun fault to the southeast. The palaeogeographic distribution is the result of a broadly NE-SW extensional tectonic event. The Early Turonian distension is followed by the Middle and Upper Turonian sinistral transtension, causing an inversion of the structuring and a new distribution of the deposits.
