Deformation Modeling of Flexible Pavement in Expansive Subgrade in Texas

Abstract: The tendency of expansive subgrade soil to undergo swelling and shrinkage with the change in moisture has a significant impact on the performance of the pavement. The repeated cycles of wet and dry periods throughout a year lead to considerable stress concentration in the pavement subgrade soil. Such stress concentrations leads to the formation of severe pavement cracks. The objective of the research is to develop a prediction model to estimate the deformation of pavement over expansive subgrade. Two pavement … Show more

“…Flexible pavements are also subject to edge defects in the form of edge deformation as a result of insufficient pavement width, poor edge/shoulder support and pavement resurfacing (Fwa, 2006). A weak unbound layer due to frost action may also result in edge deformation (Ahmed, 2017).…”

“…Premature failure of roads and structural problems appear in areas of expansive soils as a result of poor drainage design and a lack of regular maintenance ( 21 ). Settlement or heave as a result of expansive soils cause serious distress in asphalt pavements leading to substantial discomfort, safety hazards, and vehicle damage ( 22 ).…”
