Objective: To analyze, using scanning electron microscopy [SEM], the morphological changes [distortion, loss of substance, and fracture] of ProTaper SX rotary instruments submitted to nitrogen ion implantation. Methods: Thirty ProTaper SX Instruments were divided into 3 groups of 10 instruments each. Groups A and B were subjected to ionic implantation with bands of nitrogen ions at 100 kV [group A] or 200 kV [group B] and an ion dose of 1.0×10 17 ions/cm². Instruments in group C served as unmodified controls. Each instrument was utilized to prepare 5 canals in epoxy resin blocks with a brushing motion. Instruments were examined by SEM before use and after 60 s and 300 s of work inside canals in epoxy resin blocks. Results: No significant morphologic alterations were observed between the groups of instruments after preparation of the simulated canals. However, whereas only 1 instrument in group A and 1 instrument in group B fractured during use, 3 instruments in group C fractured during use. Conclusion: Ionic implantation of nitrogen ions moderately improved the performance of SX files. Instruments treated by ionic implantation at either dose yielded better results than the untreated control group, although the differences were not significant.

To evaluate the efficacy of ProTaper Universal rotary retreatment system and the influence of sealer type on the presence of filling debris in the reinstrumented canals viewed in an operative clinical microscope. Forty-five palatal root canals of first molars were filled with gutta-percha and one of the following sealers: G1, EndoFill; G2, AH Plus; G3, Sealapex. The canals were then reinstrumented with ProTaper Universal rotary system. Roots were longitudinally sectioned and examined under an operative clinical microscope (10×), and the amount of filling debris on canal walls was analyzed using the AutoCAD 2004 software. A single operator used a specific software tool to outline the canal area and the filling debris area in each third (cervical, middle, and apical), as well as the total canal area. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Tukey test at P < 0.05. Sealapex demonstrated significant differences in the average of filling debris area/canal among the 3 thirds. This group revealed that apical third showed more debris than the both cervical and middle third (P < 0.0001). Endofill presented significantly more filling debris than Sealapex in the cervical third (P < 0.05). In the middle (P = 0.12) and apical third (P = 0.10), there were no differences amongst groups. Debris was left in all canal thirds, regardless of the retreatment technique. The greatest differences between techniques and sealers were found in the cervical third.

The aim of this study was to make a comparative evaluation of the surface topography of the cervical third and tip of four different rotary systems, before and after being used 12 times, in resin blocks with simulated root canals with standardized 45° curvatures, and analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). A total of 1,440 resin blocks with simulated root canals and standardized curvatures were used. The blocks were divided into four groups and prepared by the crown down technique according to the manufacturers' recommendations: Group 1 (G1)--K3®, Group 2 (G2)--Protaper Universal®, Group 3 (G3)--Twisted Files®, and Group 4 (G4)--Biorace®. After each preparation, the instruments were washed and autoclaved. A total of 24 instruments were selected, being three new instruments and three after having been used for the 12th time, from each group. These instruments were analyzed by SEM. To perform the evaluation, 24 micrographs were observed by 12 evaluators who attributed a score to the images according to a template. In the qualitative analysis of the cervical region and tip of new instruments, it was observe that the files of Groups G4 and G2 were the least rough and those of G1, the roughest. In the same manner, the cervical region of the instruments was qualitatively analyzed after the 12th time of using them, and there was no statistically significant difference at a level of 1% (ANOVA P < 0.01) between G2 and G4 as well as between G1 and G3. As regards the tip, it was observed that there was no statistically significant difference, at a level of 1%, between the groups: G1 and G3, G1 and G4, and between G3 and G4, and there was statistically significant difference at a level of 1%, between group G2 and the other groups, with G3 having the greatest roughness (ANOVA P < 0.01).
