Deformation Activity Analysis of a Ground Fissure Based on Instantaneous Total Energy

Abstract: This study proposes a novel instantaneous total energy method to perform an activity analysis of ground fissures deformation, which is calculated by integrating the extreme-point symmetric mode decomposition (ESMD) method and kinetic energy based on the time-series displacement acquired by shape acceleration array (SAA) sensors. The proposed method is tested on the Xiwang Road fissure in Beijing, China. First, to fully monitor the hanging wall and footwall of the monitored ground fissure, a 4 m-long SAA in the… Show more

“…Ground ruptures, associated with land subsidence due to excessive groundwater withdrawal, are becoming a widespread environmental hazard, mainly affecting semiarid regions. An increasing effort has been devoted to monitor (Carpenter, 2015; Holzer & Pampeyan, 1981; J. Liu et al., 2017; X. Liu et al., 2019), model (Hernandez‐Marín & Burbey, 2012; Malinowska et al., 2018; Panda et al., 2015; Ye et al., 2018), and understand the main mechanisms of this hydrogeomechanical process through general hazard and sensitivity analyses (Choubin et al., 2019; Frigo et al., 2019; Y. “…As a kind of supergene geological disaster phenomenon, ground fissure is common in many countries in the world (Bankher and Al-Harthi, 1999;Ayalew et al, 2004;Eleni et al, 2014;Gaur et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2016). Ground fissure can lead the ground and underground buildings to crack, the road surface to damage (Zhao et al, 2015;Xiong et al, 2017;Liu et al, 2019) and bring a lot of inconvenience for residents (Peng et al, 2007;Huang et al, 2010). A large number of surveys show that the ground fissure is not only the source of the earthquake but also the place where suffers from most seriously damage when earthquake happens (Liu et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2011;Peng et al, 2012;Liu et al, 2018).…”

“…In Ref. 5, a shape acceleration array (SAA) sensor was used to monitor the internal soil mass of the Xiwang Road ground fissure located in Shunyi District, Beijing. The measurement results were comprehensively analyzed by two methods based on instantaneous total energy and displacement.…”

“…Finally, by combining the results with historical research data, the activity mechanism of this ground fissure was obtained and the factors affecting its activity were briefly summarized. (5) Although an SAA can precisely monitor the displacement of soil within ground fissures, it is difficult to express the effects of regional environmental factors on the deformation mechanism and activity rate of ground fissures. In recent decades, radar remote sensing has become an important remote sensing technology for earth observation because of its advantages of all-day, all-weather use, high spatial resolution, and insensitivity to the effects of the atmosphere and season.…”
