Definitive radiotherapy for early stage glottic cancer by 6 MV photons

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the clinical outcome of early glottic cancer (GC) treated by primary radiotherapy (RT) with 6 MV photons. Methods and materialsWe retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 695 consecutive patients with T1N0 and T2N0 GC treated between 1983 and 2005 by RT in our institution. Clinical outcome in terms of local control (LC), overall survival (OS) and cause- specific survival (CSS) rate were evaluated.ResultsThe median follow-up time was 10.5 years. The 10-year actuarial LC rates were as fo… Show more

“…Patients treated with radiation therapy (RT) for tumor (T)1 glottic squamous cell carcinoma have excellent disease control rates, with a general local control probability >90% for T1a disease, and ranging from 64% to 93% for T1b . The conventional radiation therapy (ConRT) technique uses opposed lateral radiation fields that give full or greater dose to the adjacent carotid arteries .…”

“…The purpose of treating T1/T2 laryngeal cancer is to cure the disease with larynx function preservation, most specifically the maintenance of voice function and quality . Many past researches have regarded RT as the mainstay of treatment for such patients . A study from Australia highlighted the importance by concluding that RT for early‐stage laryngeal cancer results in both subjective and objective improvements in voice quality .…”

“…A 6 MV photon line was selected, and electron beam irradiation with appropriate energy was applied on the posterior region of neck. Its radiation dose was Dt60-70 Gy/6-7 weeks (2.0 Gy/d, 5 times a week),3 and the spinal cord dose was less than 40 Gy. The patients who could receive surgery after radiotherapy for N2 or above lymph node metastasis were subjected to cervical lymph node dissection.…”
