Pingelap Atoll, 1.8 km2 in area and nearly 70 km from the nearest island, presents a clear example of anthropogenic niche-building in physically isolated circumstances with limited resources. This paper presents the first radiocarbon (14C) dates (n=8) from an archaeological project examining settlement and subsistence practices on the atoll, specifically how Pingelapese people have constructed the environment to meet their needs over centuries of occupation. These dates confirm that human occupation of Pingelap occurred by 1700–1550 cal BP (2σ) at the latest, only a few centuries after the earliest securely-dated settlement of high islands in the region (Kosrae and Pohnpei), and with strikingly similar timing to another atoll in the region, Mwoakilloa. Evidence of early settlement includes shell tools, ornaments, extensive marine faunal remains, and charred botanical domesticates. These preliminary data build a framework for the settlement history and environment building of Pingelap.

Micronesia is especially notable for its astounding marine ecological diversity and rich cultural and archaeological heritage. It is also well known for native peoples here having some of the earliest Oceanic contacts with Europeans. beginning when Magellan first sighted Guam in 1521. Micronesia has a long history of anthropological research. particularly by Japanese and American scholars. Since the 1960s there has been an increasing number of archaeologists, biologists. and other scientists coming to the region to help better understand these remarkably distinctive. but relatively little known islands.Nonetheless. Micronesia still has not been given the attention it deserves in discussions of Pacific or world prehistory. Rainbird's book is the first major attempt to synthesize the growing body of literature coming out of this region (or "unregion" as Rainbird calls it) to provide a framework for understanding the antiquity of human arrival. culture change. and the debates surrounding how these societies have been analysed. interpreted. and viewed by outsiders. In doing so. Rainbird approaches Micronesian archaeology from a "fluidity" and "fusion" perspective in which the interactions between islanders and outsiders are emphasized.Each of the nine chapters is. for the most part. nicely written and well researched. In the first three. Rainbird describes the encounters Europeans had with various Micronesian island cultures. the inherent biases present in these reports. the effects and influences of larger world powers such as Spain. Germany. and Britain. and how subsequent anthropological and other ideological constructs have structured the study of Micronesia archaeologically. These chapters clearly project the post-colonial critique that Rainbird frequently subscribes to in his analyses of prehistoric societies. He approaches Micronesia from a post-processual perspective that is historically and anthropologically grounded. not from a deterministic or functional (i.e. processual) view that has been more commonly applied by archaeologists working in the region. By virtue of this theoretical stance. Rainbird shies away from detailed descriptions of island environments and subsistence strategies. for example. and chooses instead to concentrate on issues related to how historians. anthropologists. linguists. politicians. and archaeologists have constructed and deconstructed Micronesian societies over time (Chapter 2). This approach. although providing welcome insight into how various cultural behaviours were modified by these contacts and interactions. leads to a synthesis that some may find disjointed or incomplete. especially those seeking evolutionary or environmental mechanisms that could have contributed to culture change.In Chapter 4. Rainbird discusses issues surrounding the timing and movement of Micronesian populations. providing a good summary of the existing data that demonstrate just how complex the settlement histories of these islands are. with multiple origins at different points in time.
