Definition of Ross River Virus Vectors at Maroochy Shire, Australia

Abstract: Evidence of Ross River (RR) virus infection in field-collected mosquitoes and data from laboratory vector competence experiments incriminated a range of mosquito species as important vectors of RR virus in Maroochy Shire, Queensland, Australia. Nine RR and 2 Barmah Forest virus isolates were recovered from 27,529 mosquitoes collected in light traps from Maroochy Shire during 1996. Nine of the 10 most abundant mosquito species collected in light traps were fed on blood containing the B94/20 strain RR isolated f… Show more

“…vigilax in saltmarsh regions and Cx. annulirostris inland that transmit at rates of up to 100% (Ballard and Marshall 1986), 57% (Kay 1982), and 46% (Ryan et al 2000), respectively. These three species are also believed to be the main vectors for BFV.…”

“…Other species that might be vectors are also considered. RRV has been isolated from over 30 mosquito species in Australia (27,79,114,158,167,173). The vector status of most of these is unknown, because data on experimental infection and transmission and association with human infection, which are requisites to establish vector status, are lacking (123,193).…”

“…Marshall and Miles (130) and Russell (167) agree that C. annulirostris is predominantly an inland rural vector. However, RRV isolates have been obtained from C. annulirostris trapped in Queensland coastal areas, and it undoubtedly also plays a vector role in these areas (79,158,173).…”

“…Its association with human health risks, such as Ross River Virus (Ryan et al 2000), has made it a focus for studies on saltmarshes in Australia (Dale et al 1993;Ritchie 1994;Ritchie and Jennings 1994;Gislason and Russell 1997;Turner and Streever 1997;Chapman et al 1999;Turner and Streever 1999;Webb and Russell 1999). It is clear, however, that spiders and insects from most of their orders (Homoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera) are common on saltmarshes (Hutchings and Recher 1974;Marsh 1982;Clarke and Miller 1983; Laegdsgaard unpublished data).…”
