Defining the balance point between conservation and development

Abstract: In the face of the current global ecological crisis and the threats it poses to human survival and security, the fundamental solution is to resolve the deep contradiction between conservation and economic development. We considered the 3 key and basic questions of why to protect, how much to protect, and where to protect natural areas. Human survival depends on functioning ecosystems and the ecosystem services they provide. In this regard, conserving core biodiversity conservation priority areas (BCPAs) can pr… Show more

“…A multitude of research has underscored diverse conflicts between human development and wildlife conservation, sparking extensive research on balancing wildlife conservation and human development (Pimm et al., 2014 ; Pooley et al., 2021 ; Tian et al., 2019 ; Yin et al., 2021 ). Commonly proposed policies include enforcing restrictions on livestock grazing and planting in reserves and limiting residential expansion.…”

“…In order to achieve sustainable development, ecological infrastructure needs to be designed when national policies are set. A recurrent and relevant question that policymakers ask conservationists is how much of a society's territory should be allocated to ecological infrastructure (Tian et al 2019). There is not a single answer to this question because the appropriate proportion of a territory that should be set aside for conservation depends on the spatial distribution of the ecological attributes that are to be protected (Margules & Pressey 2000, Watson et al 2011.…”

“…We first developed a theory about NCN. It is generally assumed that natural conservation and social development contradict each other in the real world [42,43], and people are normally poor and ill-educated in well ecologically-protected areas. We argued that natural and social conditions can be parallel within a protected social-ecological system.…”
