Defining the allometry of stem and crown diameter of urban trees

Abstract: There is a strong allometric relationship between stem diameter at breast height (DBH) and crown diameter in healthy trees in the young to mature stages of their growth. How do geographical position, site conditions and management treatments influence this relationship? This study included only free-standing urban trees, thus providing data on the growth potential of the species included in the survey in typical urban conditions by linking this with estimated tree age. Field work involved recording the dimensi… Show more

“…Since there w no specific information with respect to tree age and history of crown pruning treatmen the main criterion for selecting trees for the study was based on diameter at breast heig (dbh) exceeding 30 cm (Figure 2). The tree morphometric characteristics were analyzed based on parameters recommended by [6,[25][26][27][28]. The stem dbh (1.3 m-dbh (d)) was measured with a girth tape.…”

“…The horizontal projection of the crown (PCR) or crown projection area was determined by the formula PCR = DCR 2 x π /4. The tree morphometric characteristics were analyzed based on parameters reco mended by [6,[25][26][27][28]. The stem dbh (1.3 m-dbh (𝑑)) was measured with a girth tape.…”

“…The tree diameter is commonly used in allometries of trees (Dais et al, 2022). In studies conducted in urban areas, a strong relationship between the crown width and breast height diameter has been found (Semenzato, 2011;Troxel et al, 2013;Coombes et al, 2019). Vaz Monteiro et al (2016) referred that a correct estimation of crown width from breast height diameter can be achieved.…”

“…In many large cities of the world, different types of oak are found in parks, forests and local landscaping, for example, in New York (Banzhaf 2020), Berlin (Nickel et al 2019), US cities (Hill andBarone 2005, Earles et al 2018), Nikolaev (Kozlova et al 2019), Krakow (Klamerus-Iwan et al 2018), UK (Coombes et al 2019), Tbilisi and Kutaisi (Abramidze et al 2017) and other.…”
