A public space is an area that accommodates all the activities of city residents, both individually and in groups, and should be utilised optimally as a responsive, democratic, and meaningful space. Limited public space can pose a problem; thus, it is necessary to develop new public spaces to accommodate all community activities and needs. This research aims to analyse the forms of public space development for medium cities in Indonesia, with Palu City as the case study. The study employed the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) methods to determine urban public spaces' form and development using existing criteria and alternative potential spaces. The AHP method in this research is designed to calculate the criteria weights. Meanwhile, after the criteria weights were obtained, the COPRAS method was utilised to determine the best alternative from several existing alternatives. The study results indicated that the post-liquefaction area (memorial park) in the Balaroa sub-district can serve as a potential alternative for developing the public space. The development of public space in Palu city in selected locations based on AHP-COPRAS analysis was directed by a green design approach and local wisdom (genius loci). The expected impact of this design approach is to produce a better living environment that can support ecological and socio-cultural and provide economic benefits (welfare) for the surrounding community.

Producing buildings that can adapt to climatic conditions is one of the notable abilities of people who improve the quality of their houses. Lake Tundai is a residential area in Palangka Raya, Indonesia, occupied by a fishing community, isolated and only accessible through the Kahayan River. People prefer wood materials for house construction, and with a largely impoverished population, they remain in those houses they have inherited from the past. However, it is an example of a village resistant to the effects of global climate change, because their houses are climate-friendly, although natural breeze is the only thermal comfort enjoyed by the inhabitants of Lake Tundai. Using thermal performance simulation on the Tundai Lake houses, this research presents four types applied to four variable elements through the Ecotect analysis program to ascertain how the houses deal with the climate. Based on the climatic conditions in Lake Tundai. Type 2 with stilts, light roof, light walls, single ventilation, and ceiling is the most suitable model condition in Tundai Lake. The research concluded in 2023 that the influence of the building floor height from the ground may affect the thermal comfort in the room. If the floor height over the water level is below 1.2 meters. This study proposes an example of housing adaptation using wood materials nearby the water.

A Systematic Literature Review of Applied Methods for Assessing the Effects of Public Open Spaces on Immigrants’ Place Attachment

Moving to a new country is often combined with issues such as stress and a sense of loss that affect the overall well-being of immigrants. Furthermore, immigrants have not yet developed strong attachments to the country and, more specifically, to the places in which they will settle. Researchers have already discussed the role of the built environment for well-being and the sense of belonging and attachment it can provide, specifically through public open spaces, such as parks, squares, etc. These problems are worldwide, and the World Health Organization (WHO) also recommends creating public places that improve human health, well-being, and social inclusion. Moreover, at local levels, designers and urbanists must understand how to evaluate the relationship between immigrants’ place attachment and public places in order to improve the design of these places. Consequently, this study reviewed methods used to understand the effects of public open spaces on immigrants’ attachment. A systematic quantitative literature review was conducted, and a total of 26 articles were extracted relating to immigrants’ place attachment and public open spaces. Research locations, participants’ nationalities, the types of public open spaces, the methods applied, and place attachment evaluations were retrieved from the articles and analysed. The results show that evaluating immigrants’ place attachment presents many challenges, and there is no consensus on what approaches are best practices. However, qualitative methods were most applied in human–environment interactions, and immigrants’ place attachments were primarily assessed based on their social bonds in public open spaces. To conclude, a framework was designed to understand how immigrants’ place attachment was evaluated in the reviewed literature, and the dimensions of place attachment were defined.
