Respiration of Gametangia of the Aquatic Phycomycete Allomyces macrogynus

“…This subgenus is characterized by having alternating, isomorphic, mycelial generations (6), which can be cultured separately. The gametophyte is hermaphroditic and there appears to be a relationship between respiration and sexual expression (24)(25)(26). We have found (15) that by adding antimycin, an inhibitor of the Cyt-mediated respiration to the culture medium for wild type A. macrogynus, the gametophyte which develops is predominantly male.…”
