Defensins as a promising class of tick antimicrobial peptides: a scoping review

Abstract: Background Ticks are hematophagous parasites that transmit an extensive range of pathogens to their vertebrate hosts. Ticks can destroy invading microorganisms or alleviate infection via their rudimentary but orchestrated innate immune system. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of tick innate immunity. Among these humoral effector molecules, defensins are well-studied and widely identified in various species of Ixodidae (hard ticks) and Argasidae (soft ticks). This review wa… Show more

“…Therefore, fungal-derived defensins are known as defensin-like peptides based on their high sequence and structural similarities. Although fungal AMPs are similar in their structure and peptide sequences, their activities against Gram-positive and/or Gram-negative bacteria and/or fungi differ [ 21 ].…”

“…Defensins are small cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) that are part of the innate immune system in both hard and soft tick species (Kopácek et al 2010; Wu et al 2022). A characteristic feature of these secreted effector molecules is their small molecular size of about 4 kDa and the conserved pattern of six cysteine residues forming three intrachain disulfide bridges (Wang & Zhu 2011).…”

“…Human alpha-defensins are located on chromosome 8 [ 6 ]. Structurally, they are a family of small peptides (less than 10 kDa) [ 10 ]. Alpha-defensins are first-line defense peptides of the innate immunity [ 8 , 11 ].…”
