“…In a few years, Denmark effectively transformed itself from what was often considered the weakest link in NATO to a Nordic and European defence policy avant garde . Denmark sent combat forces abroad and reformed its defence forces “[e]ven before the new security environment had been fully realised”, and the goal of taking full advantage of the new security environment was shared by foreign policy makers as well as the Danish Armed Forces, who “enthusiastically embraced expeditionary military operations as the new sine qua non , and pushed actively for greater professionalization and internationalization of the Services” (Saxi, : 416). “…Recent research into defence and military planning in small states has included studies based on specific aspects of force and capability developmentsuch as the procurement focus of Stefan Markowski, Peter Hall and Robert Wylie's (2010) work on defence procurement and industry policy -and the analysis of how small states apply modern military concepts such as the revolution in military affairs (as developed in the work of Francis Domingo (2014), Tim Huxley (2004), Bernard Loo (2009b) and Michael ). This is complemented by consideration of the form and effect of small state defence policies (as shown by Håkon Lunde Saxi's (2010aSaxi's ( , 2010b comparative analysis of Norwegian and Danish defence policies); with additional studies further considering the role of small states in current operations 1 and how they may develop their capabilities through innovation and development 2 . In addition to the issue focused nature of this research, a further form of research comprises studies of selected small states, such as Shang-su Wu's (2016) analysis of the defence capabilities of Singapore and Taiwan, that examine how these states provide for their security and defence.…”
