“…Some studies have demonstrated that resistance to S. scitamineum is associated with chemical barriers, such as the presence of phenylpropanoids, flavonoids (Fontaniella et al 2002;de Armas et al 2007), free and conjugated glycoproteins, and an increase of polyamines in sugarcane buds (Millanes et al 2008). Glycoproteins prevent the correct arrangement of microtubules and cause nuclear fragmentation defects, contributing to germinative failure of teliospores (Sánchez-Elordi et al 2016). Likewise, resistance may be associated with the presence of trichomes, and the quantity of scales present in buds (da Gloria et al 1995).…”

“…Microtubules-actin interactions regulate important processes in which dynamic cellular asymmetries need to be established such as cell motility, neuronal pathfinding, cellular wound healing, cell division, and cortical flow [57]. The presence of tubulin has also been demonstrated by immunohistochemical techniques in S. scitamineum cells [58].…”

“…It is clear that cytoskeleton plays a crucial role in polarity establishment in fungal cells during germination: microtubules support nuclei division and long-distance-transport functions in filamentous fungi, whereas actin microfilaments are required for localized targeting events [61]. Microtubule organization in S. scitamineum teliospores seems to be crucial for a successful germination [58]. S. scitamineum secretes its own arginase, which activates a signal transduction cascade that accelerates teliospore germination when it binds to its cell wall.…”

“…Sugarcane smut is one of the most serious diseases of sugarcane. The disease is caused by the fungus, Sporisorium scitamineum, which infects plants through buds on standing stalks or germinating buds in the soil (Sundar et al, 2012;Sánchez-Elordi et al, 2016), can cause considerable yield losses and reductions in cane quality (Olweny et al, 2008). The best control method is to use resistant cultivars, which are widely available in different countries where sugarcane is grown (Chen et al, 2012), however, costs make this strategy expensive.…”
