Defects of the steel billet in continuous casting

Abstract: In continuous casting process, defects of the steel billet (e.g. crack, pinhole, blowhole, central shrinkage, slag entrapment and appearance deviation, etc.) negatively affect the quality and the yield of rolled products. This research has been carried out to investigate some defects which often occurred in Vietnamese steel plants. The experimental work was conducted in an industrial 4-strands continuous casting machine with the billet’s cross-section of 130×130 mm2. The position, generating cause identific… Show more

“…1 In manufacturing process of blades, there are several tiny blowholes and micro cracks, which are the early defects for compressor blades. 2 With the presence of an artificial flaw and in-service loading of centrifugal force, the early defects are damaged and tended to cracks, which release the acoustic emission (AE) waves during this process. 3 For the structural health monitoring (SHM) of compressor, the crack propagation and potential safety risks can be effectively avoided by monitoring the onset of crack in advance.…”

“…[2] Moreover, the cracks in continuous casting slabs or billet generated during the actual production have yet to be completely solved. [3,4] Therefore, an increasing number of researchers are focusing on continuous casting slabs or billet cracks.…”
