Defective Graphene Foam: A Platinum Catalyst Support for PEMFCs

Abstract: Gram-scale synthesis of defective graphene foam from low-cost precursors is reported as a catalyst support material for platinum in fuel cell cathodes. The material was produced by combustion of sodium ethoxide, followed by washing and heat-treatment in various gases. The BET surface area is higher than 1500 m 2 /g. The defects in the material result in excellent distribution of platinum nanoparticles on the surface. The electrochemical performance is compared with platinum-decorated carbon black and commercia… Show more

“…Defective GF as a support for PtNPs provides a large surface area and small pore sizes. Loading of PtNPs can be increased from 20 wt% (for GF, carbon black, commercially available graphene) up to 33 wt% on defective GF [85]. Relative durability was tested by recording the retention of ECSA over 60,000 cycles via accelerated start/stop tests.…”

“…Significant studies carried out in this journal have focused on the use of graphene as double layer capacitors, 34,35 as a hydrogen storage medium, 36 and as an electrocatalyst support. 37,38 Modification or functionalization of the graphene surface could potentially impart unique and interesting properties, including electrocatalytic or photocatalytic properties. 39,40 For example, graphene by itself is not a photoactive material.…”
