As an emerging candidate for a sustainable power supply, moisture-electric generators (MEGs) have attracted great attention in recent years. Unlike the conventional hydroelectric system, MEGs propose to harvest energy from ambient moisture, driven by either ion diffusion under a concentration gradient or the interaction between a solid–liquid interface governed by electrostatic theory. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, in particular hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO), have been considered as the most promising materials for high-performance MEGs owing to their unique structure and properties. In line with the development of 2D nanomaterials, the recent electrical output of a single MEG has been greatly raised from tens to hundreds of millivolts, which is capable of powering commercial electronics. Herein, we have reviewed the recent progress of 2D nanomaterials in MEGs. The mechanism of moisture-induced electricity generation and strategies for tailoring 2D nanomaterials to enhance the output performance of MEGs are discussed. The potential application of MEGs is also discussed in two categories: sensing and power supply. Finally, the existing challenges and the perspective of MEGs are proposed for future study.

We developed a novel method based on the photofragmentation of inorganic salt particles for improving the moisture-electric energy transformation performance of a moisturedriven power generator (MPG). Infrared laser irradiation on cellulose nanofiber films (CNFs) prepared by a TEMPO (2,2,6,6tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)-mediated oxidation of bleached pulp induced a photothermal conversion of CNFs to porous graphitic carbon films (GCFs) with the catalyst-derived Na 2 O 2 particles. Since the laser beam was focused on the top surface of CNF, the gradients of the photothermal conversion of CNFs and Na 2 O 2 concentration were created along the thickness direction. Subsequent irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light induced the photofragmentation of the micrometer-sized Na 2 O 2 particles into smaller ones, which increased the surface area of the salt particles in contact with the GCFs and consequently increased the number of effective dissociable charge carriers. When the GCF was exposed to moisture, the dissociated sodium ions migrated along the preformed concentration gradient, producing continuous outputs of current and voltage. At 90% relative humidity, the maximum voltage and current density outputs of the MPG increased from 0.91 V and 18.7 μA/cm 2 before UV irradiation to 1.10 V and 56.2 μA/cm 2 after UV irradiation, respectively. Additionally, we demonstrated that a green light-emitting diode could be turned on without capacitors or rectifiers during normal breathing while wearing a face mask with three GCF arrays attached (each 3 mm × 3 mm × 0.1 mm in size).

Moisture-enabled electricity generation (MEG) is highly promising in nextgeneration energy conversion. However, the practical applications of existing MEG devices are limited due to their low current and voltage outputs, strong dependence on high moisture, and inflexible nature. Herein, an efficient MEG integrated with flexible, all-weather, and scalable fabrication characteristics based on the rational combination of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) and liquid metal (LM) active electrodes is developed for the first time. Remarkably, the fabricated MEG device can produce a stable voltage output of 800 mV and a record high current density of 1640 µA cm −2 . Even at a low air humidity of 15%, the MEG device can provide a high voltage output of 0.65 V and a considerable current density of 12 µA cm −2 . The prompted diffusion of hydrogen ions in CPDs and the additional metal ions ionized from the LM electrode contribute synergistically to the high electricity generation. Additionally, the device can be easily integrated on various flexible substrates and generate an ultrahigh voltage of 210 V to power commercial electronics, showing great potential in large-scale fabrication and application.
