Deepwater Batchset Operations Through the Magnolia Shallow Water Flow Sand

Abstract: ConocoPhillips is developing the Magnolia field with a Tension Leg Platform (TLP) in 4674 ft of water in Garden Banks (GB) block 783 in the Gulf of Mexico. Three wells were drilled at the eventual TLP site to discover and appraise the field prior to sanction of the development plan. Field development plans required drilling an additional six wells at the TLP site where a shallow water flow (SWF) zone is present. The development plan included batch drilling and casing the SWF interval prior to deepening any of … Show more

“…1a). This field is under a water column of 1424 m (4674 ft) (Stomp et al, 2004;Eaton et al, 2005;Colwart et al, 2007). The Titan mini-basin depocenter has a thickness of approximately 11 km of Upper Miocene to Pleistocene sediments deposited on top of the allochthonous salt sourced from the Louann Jurassic salt formation (Fig.…”

“…Few examples are given of larger hole sections experiencing these problems. Case histories in various papers only discuss successes in batch programs [29][30][31][32][33] and can leave the impression that these issues are mainly a "harder rock" or "smaller hole" issue. While bit darting, a phenomena involving a sudden angle change caused by a change in lithology and formation hardness, has been touted as improbable in ultra-soft sediments, these same sediments are more susceptible to the side cutting action of bits and lateral vibrations.…”

“…Operational practices were covered in less detail than the casing design and placement strategy. Eaton et al (2005) discussed operational practices used for jetting structural casing in a recent deepwater GOM development.…”
