“…Deep inflow of Atlantic Water, which frequently crosses the sills and sinks into the fjord basins of northern Norway (Skreslet and Loeng, 1977), is an additional factor that starts in early autumn, and increases in relative importance during late autumn and winter. Such inflow was probably evident from December to January, when the abundance of C. finmarchicus and C. helgolandicus CV increased after a period of decrease that may have been caused by predation.…”

“…Tidal jets are not generated, which makes the TTF model an irrelevant tool for such fjords. The oxygenation of their basin water is mainly due to episodic inflows of new basin water, due to wind-driven up-welling outside the sill (Skreslet & Loeng, 1977). The frequency of basin water exchange probably decreases with decreasing sill depth.…”

“…Regulated discharge from hydroelectric power plants and municipal drainage of sewage and other effluents modulates the freshwater discharge patterns. The influence of freshwater outflow on stratification of water columns and estuarine circulation is essential in basin water exchange processes (Skreslet & Loeng, 1977). The TTF model takes no account of these processes and effects, and its results should only be acknowledged as a rough approximation to real conditions.…”
