Deep Ultraviolet Resonance Raman Excitation Enables Explosives Detection

Abstract: We measured the 229 nm absolute ultraviolet (UV) Raman cross-sections of the explosives trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX), the chemically related nitroamine explosive HMX, and ammonium nitrate in solution. The 229 nm Raman cross-sections are 1000-fold greater than those excited in the near-infrared and visible spectral regions. Deep UV resonance Raman spectroscopy enables detection of explosives at parts-per-billion (ppb) concentrations and may pro… Show more

“…The spectra detected via standoff Raman spectroscopy coincide well with reference micro Raman spectrum as clearly shown in Fig. (6) as well as our standoff spectrum coincides well with previously reported literature [8][9][10]. Average difference of peak shift is about 3 cm -1 from that of Sandra Sadate et al [9] and in general the average difference of peak shift is about 2 cm -1 from that of micro Raman spectroscopy.…”

“…Detection of explosives has become more important in the last few decades because of the increasing terrorist activities at crowded places in several cities worldwide [1][2] . The growing threats and terrorist activities in last two decades have urged the need for rapid and accurate detection and identification of pre and post-blast samples.…”
