Deep learning-based dental plaque detection on primary teeth: a comparison with clinical assessments

Abstract: Background: The objectives are to design an artificial intelligence (AI) model based on deep learning to detect dental plaque on primary teeth and evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the AI model. Methods : A conventional neural network (CNN) framework was adopted, and a total of 886 photos of primary teeth taken by an intraoral camera(1280×960 pixels; TPC Ligang, Shenzhen, China) were used to train the AI model. To validate the clinical feasibility, 98 photos of primary teeth taken by the intraoral camera wer… Show more

“…29 By grouping the convolutional operation in convolutional layers, different specific features can be learned within the same layer. The use of multiple layers would lead to a hierarchical structure where the first layers will learn basic features 12,[49][50][51][52][53] oral cancer, [54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62] gingivitis, 63,64 other diseases [65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80] Radiography, 12,49,50,57,58,[65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73]77 CT images, …”

“…Deep learning methods [37] are transforming the way we approach many engineering and biomedical areas both for image and signal processing [2,25], recognition of multidimensional signal components, and their classification [34]. In particular, artificial intelligence and convolutional neural networks offer important perspectives for the analysis of medical data [8,39,41].…”
