Deep-Learning-Based Computer-Aided Systems for Breast Cancer Imaging: A Critical Review

Abstract: This paper provides a critical review of the literature on deep learning applications in breast tumor diagnosis using ultrasound and mammography images. It also summarizes recent advances in computer-aided diagnosis/detection (CAD) systems, which make use of new deep learning methods to automatically recognize breast images and improve the accuracy of diagnoses made by radiologists. This review is based upon published literature in the past decade (January 2010–January 2020), where we obtained around 250 resea… Show more

“…Researchers present a number of computer vision-based automated methods for breast cancer classification using ultrasound images [ 44 , 45 ]. A few of them concentrated on the segmentation step, followed by feature extraction [ 46 ], and a few extracted features from raw images.…”

“…One downside of mammography is that its results are dependent on the lesion type, patient's age, and breast density. To be more specific, when it comes to denser breasts, they are "radiographically" harder to see and exhibit a lower contrast between cancerous parts and their backgrounds [11].…”

“…Computer-aided diagnosis has its origins in the 1980s at the Kurt Rossmann Laboratories for Radiologic Image Research in the Department of Radiology at the University of Chicago [153]. The initial work was on the detection of breast cancer [35,153,154], and the reader is referred to a recent review [155].…”
