Deep Fungal Infections Among General Hospital Inpatients in Southwestern China: A 5-Year Retrospective Study

Abstract: BackgroundDeep fungal infection is a type of life-threatening opportunistic infection. Its incidence has been increasing in recent years. This infection can affect the prognosis of patients, prolong hospital stays and raise costs for patients and their families.ObjectiveWe aimed to understand the current situation of deep fungal infections in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University and to provide a basis for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of deep fungal infections.MethodsThis was a re… Show more

“…Secondly, the physiological age of the patient is more likely to have a meaningful effect than the biological age, 47 as the increased age reflects more of a substitute or proxy indicator for factors such as decreased immune function, combined underlying diseases, poor nutritional status, and adverse lifestyle. 48 , 49 Therefore, the effect of age is no longer statistically significant in a multifactorial model after adjustment for these factors. Finally, the lower prevalence of SSI prevented a statistically significant risk effect from being obtained with a relatively limited sample size, ie, our results may be biased by statistical type II error.…”

“…The incidence rate of deep fungal infection is increasing annually, dominated by pulmonary fungal infection accounting for 10-15% of hospital-acquired pneumonia, among which COPD ranks first [7]. It has been found in a clinical study that the respiratory tract is highly vulnerable to fungal infection [8].…”

“…Broad-spectrum antibiotics disrupt microbial balance, increasing opportunistic fungal overgrowth risk, including Clostridium difficile infections. Invasive medical devices, like catheters and ventilators, can introduce fungal agents, often resulting in Candida bloodstream infections, supported by a study on general hospital patients’ risk factors, including antibiotics, catheters, glucocorticoids, immunosuppressive agents, and chemotherapy ( 171 ).…”
