Deep Bed Filtration Modelling of Formation Damage Due to Particulate Invasion from Drilling Fluids

Abstract: A Deep Bed Filtration model has been developed to quantify the effect of solids invasion from drilling fluids on the permeability of rock formations. The calculated particletrapping profiles are compared directly with experimental profiles from scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron X -ray diffraction tomography mapping. The computed permeability reduction as a consequence of particle invasion is in broad agreement with experiment. Backflow was modelled by reversing the flow rate, starting off with a sit… Show more

“…In the colloid transport tests with the packed sand columns [2,6,7,[10][11][12], the retention profile is obtained after the column flooding by incrementally excavating sand from the column into vials and measuring the concentration of the retained colloids. In the coreflood filtration tests using the rock cores [42], a new experimental technique is applied to determine the retention profile from synchrotron energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction tomography (EDD-T) and from scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) mapping data. However, the method to determine dependence l(j) from the breakthrough concentrations and the "post mortem" retention profile would have the same shortcoming as that with the network model.…”

“…Экспериментально регистрируемая динамика изменения проницаемости пористой среды в случае закачки полимеров [22], малоконцентрированных суспензий [8,9,16,28], миграции природных мелких частиц [5] хорошо описывается зависимостью: βσ + = 1 0 k k (4) где β -коэффициент повреждения проницаемости, определяемый эмпирическим путем.…”

“…There is a number of models developed earlier for suspension filtration in a porous medium. The most frequently used model is a so-called deep-bed filtration model [2]- [4]. In the framework of this approach, three-continua description of a particle-laden filtration flow is used.…”

“…The number of tuning parameters is typically in the range from one to five. While the particles are trapped or deposited in the porous medium, the permeability is altered, which for non-colloidal particles can be described by the power law [4].…”
