Decreased Maternal Serum 2-Methoxyestradiol Levels are Associated with the Development of Preeclampsia

Abstract: Background: 2-methoxyestradiol (2-ME), a natural metabolite of 17β-estradiol, is synthesized by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). The aim of this study was to explore the maternal 2-ME concentration and placental COMT expression in the different trimesters of normal pregnancy and preeclamptic pregnancies, as well as the effects of 2-ME on cell proliferation and migration of HTR-8/SVneo under normoxic (20% O2) and hypoxic (2.5% O2) conditions. Methods: 2-ME levels were examined by ELISA… Show more

“…In addition, Shen et al, [30] suggested considering low O 2 (2.5%) is a state more closely mimicking in vivo condition using HTR-8/SVneo trophoblast cells. In the present study, moderate hypoxia clearly increased the proliferation of human trophoblast cells.…”

“…As more states have passed laws legalizing marijuana for recreational and medical use in United States, the rate of marijuana usage during pregnancy will likely grow. Although the placenta acts as a barrier to protect the fetus from toxic chemicals present in the maternal bloodstream [10], THC readily crosses the placenta and enters into the fetal bloodstream [11]. Consequently, THC may act to alter the normal function of placental trophoblasts, fetal development and influence the growth of newborns as it is also detected in breast milk [12].…”

“…Several epidemiological studies that investigated the incidence of preeclampsia by ethnicity/race observed the prevalence of preeclampsia is approximately 50% lower in the Asian population when compared with Caucasians [2][3][4][5]. Although genetic differences might play an important role [6,7], whether a high rate of chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) infection in the Asian population may influence the incidence of preeclampsia [8,9], have not been examined before.…”
