Decreased expression of kallikrein‐related peptidase 13: Possible contribution to metastasis of human oral cancer

Abstract: The human kallikrein-related peptidase family is comprised of 15 serine protease genes on chromosome 19q13.4. Our previous microarray analyses showed that the gene kallikrein-related peptidase 13 (KLK13) was down-regulated in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines. We evaluated the expression status of KLK13 in primary OSCCs and performed functional molecular experiments in OSCC cell lines. In 102 primary tumors studied, KLK13 expression significantly (P < 0.05) decreased compared with matched normal c… Show more

“…In oral squamous carcinoma cells, downregulation of KLK13 facilitates tumor invasiveness and metastasis. 24 In 88 malignant esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tumor patients, those showing a high expression of KLK13 had a poor prognosis. 25 Therefore, the role of KLK13 differs depending on cancer type, perhaps due to its central role in the KLK signal cascade, although its role in carcinogenesis remains unclear.…”

“…Abnormal expressions of MAGED4B, KLK13, MMP9 and GLUT3 were correlated with CLNM [10, 15, 16]. However, TSCC at early stage and its occult cervical lymphatic metastasis have rarely been investigated.…”

“…Similar to our data on KLK6, patients with KLK11-positive tumors had a favorable prognosis [ 41 ], and low KLK4 expression predicted short-term relapse and poor disease-free survival [ 42 ]. Finally, down-regulation of KLK13 was reported in oral SCC cell lines and low KLK13 expression in primary oral cancer significantly correlated with regional lymph node metastasis [ 43 , 44 ].…”
