Decrease in Serum Cortisol during Yoga Exercise is Correlated with Alpha Wave Activation

Abstract: We examined changes in brain waves and blood levels of serum cortisol during yoga exercise in 7 yoga instructors and found that alpha waves increased and serum cortisol decreased. These two measures were negatively correlated (r = -.83). Comparison with a control group of nonpractitioners is desirable.

“…In cross-sectional (observational) studies, the investigator does not manipulate assignment of the intervention, but rather compares, at a single point in time, indices of risk between groups with varying experience in the practice of yoga. An additional study design category included studies that monitored temporary physiologic changes occurring during 1 or 2 yoga sessions; all but one of these studies 82 included a comparison group and/or condition, although none were randomized.…”

“…16 Stress plays a major role in diabetes mellitus by triggering cortisol which dumps glucose into blood for flight or fright. 17 Bijlani et al noted that a favorable metabolic response can be produced even by short lifestyle management and stress management programmes. 18 These could explain significant decline in the FBS values of the experimental group after yogic practice.…”

“…[11] A state of mental tranquility is achieved by the practice of yoga as revealed by increase in alpha index of electroencephalogram after short term yoga. [11,12] Yoga can protect the individual by bringing harmony between mind and body, modulating stress responses and one's attitude to stress as also improving mental faculties such as attention, memory, learning efficiency and positive attitude to life. [13,14,15] Total growth of personality at physical, mental, intellectual and social level can result with the regular practice of yoga.…”
