“…Several methods have traditionally been employed to keep humidity, oxygen, and insects away from field crops in order to preserve them, with airtight sealed containers, along with pits lined with straw or chaff, being among the most common (Reynolds 1974;Sigaut 1980;1988;Fairbairn, Omura 2005, Villers et al 2006Diffey et al 2017;Urem-Kotsou 2017). However, it is difficult to find evidence for such techniques in the archaeological record, particularly regarding regions with earthen architecture and in the absence of carbonized cereals (Monah 2002;Marinova, Valamoti 2014;Hrisrova et al 2017;Valamoti et al 2019 for an overview of such evidence from southeastern Europe).
