Basella alba aqueous leaf extract was employed for the synthesis of ZnO and Ag/ZnO nanocomposites (NC), eliminating the use of hazardous chemicals. UV‐visible spectroscopic analysis, X‐ray diffraction studies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopic analysis were used to determine the optical properties, crystalline structure, phytoconstituents, surface morphology, and elemental composition of the fabricated nanomaterials. The synthesized NC were employed as antioxidant in order to determine their free radical‐quenching effect. In vitro antibacterial activity assays exhibited their enhanced potential on selective gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacterial pathogens. The Ag/ZnO NC display a rapid catalytic reduction rate for rhodamine B, methylene blue, and methyl orange with degradation rates of 88 %, 90 %, and 92 %, respectively. Thus, an environmentally benign, cost‐effective synthetic methodology is presented for the size‐controlled synthesis of nanomaterials which act as multifunctional platform to alleviate organic pollutants.

Engineered nano-ZnO is extensively utilized in both production and daily life, leading to its inevitable entry into the wastewater treatment system through various pathways. Nitrogen removal microorganisms in wastewater treatment systems are highly susceptible to environmental impacts. The antibacterial properties of nano-ZnO can impede the biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process and adversely affect the nitrogen removal performance. A comprehensive understanding of the inhibitory effect and mechanism of nano-ZnO on the BNR process is crucial in devising appropriate countermeasures to ensure optimal nitrogen removal performance. This review provides an overview of the sources of nano-ZnO in the environment, its impact on the BNR process, and the inhibition mechanism, and proposes potential methods that can mitigate the inhibitory effect of nano-ZnO. Additionally, future prospects are also discussed. This review serves as a foundation for a deeper understanding of the inhibition of engineered nano-ZnO on the BNR process and aids in guiding efforts to maintain the nitrogen removal performance in the presence of engineered nano-ZnO.

In low- to middle-income communities, the lack of affordability of conventional sanitary products during menstrual cycles can cause psychological and health issues, ultimately affecting their quality of life. It is crucial to develop alternative products that are affordable and accessible to all while also promoting menstrual health and hygiene. Super absorbent polymers (SAPs) are a vital component in current disposable sanitary pads and nappies. However, these SAPs are often non-biodegradable and non-biocompatible. Therefore, the use of eco-friendly materials for the production of SAPs is gaining popularity in the hygiene industry, as it offers a means to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact associated with traditional SAPs made from non-renewable petroleum-based materials. SAPs made from polysaccharides often have naturally occurring antibacterial properties, making them appealing for commercial applications in sanitary products such as sanitary pads. In addition, the move toward reusable sanitary pads with antibacterial properties can significantly reduce waste generated by single-use products and prevent the growth of bacteria, improving the safety and hygiene of the product. Furthermore, computational modeling and artificial intelligence are now important tools in SAP synthesis, providing advantages such as predicting polymer properties, rationalizing synthesis pathways, and improving quality control. These tools can reduce synthesis costs by eliminating the need for trial-and-error approaches in polymer synthesis, ultimately promoting more affordable products for end users. Overall, these advancements in polymer synthesis and material design can help to create a more sustainable industry and promote menstrual hygiene and product accessibility to those who need it most.
