Decomposition Properties of C4F7N/N2 Gas Mixture: An Environmentally Friendly Gas to Replace SF6

Abstract: The insulation characteristics and decomposition components of C4F7N/N2 gas mixture, a potential substitute for SF6, were first explored by breakdown experiments/gas chromatography–mass spectrometer. The structural properties of C4F7N molecule and the decomposition mechanism of C4F7N/N2 gas mixture were analyzed based on the density functional theory calculation and ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation. We found that C4F7N/N2 mixture has great self-recovery performance. The decomposition of C4F7N in a discharg… Show more

“…Overall, the toxicity of the products was lower than that of the products of SF 6 decomposition, and was acceptable. Besides, N 2 was more likely to decompose than C 4 F 7 N. Thus, it acted as buffer gas and avoided the excessive decomposition of C 4 F 7 N, which ensured the insulation performance [56]. For C 4 F 7 N, the decomposed products were mainly C 3 F 7 , CN, CNF, CF 3 , CF 2 , CF, CF 3 CFCN(C 3 NF 4 ), F, other free radicals, and CF 4 .…”

“…Meanwhile, more values in the E/N that varied from 750 to 1150 Td were obtained in the present work. According to the bond length values of the C4F7N molecule [21], the structure of the C4F7N molecule could be drawn as in Figure 5. A recent study [22] shows that the bonds of C-1 to C-2 and C-1 to C-3 have the smallest bond energy, which is 3.812 eV/atom.…”

“…Then, SF6 is more likely to exhibit ionization characteristics, which could lead to the higher effective ionization coefficients of SF6 than that of C4F7N for the same E/N. According to the bond length values of the C 4 F 7 N molecule [21], the structure of the C 4 F 7 N molecule could be drawn as in Figure 5. “…The chemical characteristics of the gas are similar to those of fluoro organic gas, and the chemical characteristics are relatively stable, which can achieve good compatibility with other materials in electrical equipment. The relative molecular weight of C 4 F 7 N is 195.0, and it also has a high liquefaction temperature, which is −4.7°C [29]. Therefore, it also needs to be mixed with buffer gas.…”
