Decomposition of Freon-12 and Methyl Chloride over Supported Gold Catalysts

Abstract: Decomposition of Freon-12 (CCl2F2) and methyl chloride (CH3Cl) over gold catalysts were studied. Au/Co3O4 showed a high activity for CH3Cl but a lesser activity for CCl2F2 while Au/Al2O3 showed moderate activities for the both reactants. The first step of the reactions over Au/Al2O3 was considered as substitution of Cl by surface OH group on support surface.

“…Because of the stability of Au toward halogens, some supported Au catalysts have been reported to be more active and stable for reactions involving halogens such as the oxidative decomposition of chlorofluorocarbons and dioxin and related compounds than other noble metal catalysts 107–110. It should be especially noted that AuCl 3 supported on activated carbon is the most active among metal chloride catalysts for the hydrochlorination of acetylene to produce vinyl chloride 107…”

“…Gold supported on cobalt oxide or alumina are claimed to be as active as platinum catalysts for the oxidative decomposition of dichlorodifluoromethane and methyl chloride (16). For example, 5wt% AU/C0 304 can be used to completely decompose methyl chloride at around 600 K.…”

“…In order to develop even more efficient, selective, and sustainable catalysts, the suitability of gold catalysts in CVOC oxidation also needs to be investigated. Aida et al [ 22 ] studied Au catalysts having different loadings on a number of metal oxides in methyl chloride (CH 3 Cl) oxidation. Another study by Aida et al [ 23 ] included experiments with 1.4 wt.% Au/TiO 2 catalyst in methyl chloride oxidation and 5 wt.% Au/Al 2 O 3 catalyst in methyl chloride, DCM, chloroform (CHCl 3 ), and carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) oxidation.…”
