Decomposition of Differences between Household Income Distributions in Poland in Years 2002 and 2012

Abstract: In this study we present the decomposition of income inequalities between household income distributions in Poland in 2002 and 2012. The difference between two distributions may be decomposed using the counterfactual distribution, which can be constructed in various ways. Techniques such as the residual imputation approach and RIF‑regression method (recentered influence function) were considered. The application of these methods made it possible to show the aggregate detailed decompositions in differen… Show more

“…Decomposition techniques are most commonly used in studying gender pay gaps using linear regression models (see Słoczyński, 2012;Zajkowska, 2013;Śliwicki and Ryczkowski, 2014;Landmesser et al, 2015, Landmesser, 2017. Such studies mainly use the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition technique, dividing the group differences into two parts: a part explained by compositional differences and a part that is 'attributable to the coefficients' (Blinder 1973;Oaxaca 1973).…”

“…Nieliczne przykłady zastosowań regresji kwantylowej stanowią prace: [Newell, Socha 2005;Magda, Szydłowski 2008;Rokicka, Ruzik 2010]. Konstrukcję rozkładu kontrfaktycznego symulacyjną metodą Machado-Mata (bazującą na równaniach regresji kwantylowej) przeprowadziła autorka artykułu w swoich wcześniejszych pracach ( [Landmesser, Karpio, Łukasiewicz 2015;Landmesser 2016;Karpio i in. 2016]).…”

“…To decompose the differences between the two distributions one can use the so-called counterfactual distribution, which can be constructed in various ways (see for example, DiNardo et al (1996), Donald, Green and Paarsch (2000), Machado andMata (2005), Fortin, Lemieux andFirpo (2010)). Examples of the applications of these techniques for the analysis of income inequalities in Poland are Matysiak, Baranowska and Słoczyński (2010), Słoczyński (2012), Landmesser, Karpio and Łukasiewicz (2015), Landmesser (2016). We will examine the differences along the whole earnings distributions by the use of the residual imputation approach (JMP-approach) (Juhn, Murphy, Pierce, 1993).…”
