Decomposability in Knowledge Structures and Its Impact on the Usefulness of Inventions and Knowledge-base Malleability

Abstract: We use patent data from the worldwide semiconductor industry from 1984 to 1994 to study the effect of the structure of organizational knowledge bases, or the patterns of coupling between their elements of technical knowledge, on the usefulness of inventions and knowledge-base malleability. We argue that organizational variations in coupling patterns between knowledge elements can be reflected in a spectrum of knowledge-base structures—varying from fully decomposable (the knowledge base is composed of distinct … Show more

“…Though searching widely for technology solutions has positive implications, extensive experimentation without deep understanding of the causal relationships between components may prove counterproductive (George et al, 2008;Lee et al, 2004;Yayavaram and Ahuja, 2008 (March, 1991). To create impact, firms will need to develop a deeper understanding of the new technical field that they enter in order to build on existing knowledge.…”

“…In a study of large chemical firms, Ahuja and Lampert (2001) proffer evidence to suggest that mature incumbents overcome pathologies of aging by branching into new domains and by recombining new with old knowledge. Other researchers have investigated the temporal and structural effects of recombining new with old knowledge on innovative output (Nerkar, 2003;Rosenkopf and Nerkar, 2001;Rothaermel and Boeker, 2008;Yayavaram and Ahuja, 2008). We contribute to this conversation by examining the role of entry into novel technology areas, i.e.…”

“…The size and structure of an organization's KS can determine how well this organization manages knowledge resources and creates capacities (Yayavaram & Ahuja, 2008). However, without KA, other processes of KM make little sense because firms generate, acquire, store, and share knowledge to apply that knowledge, and make the company more competitive.…”
