Decoherence, matter effect, and neutrino hierarchy signature in long baseline experiments

Abstract: International audienceEnvironmental decoherence of oscillating neutrinos of strength Γ=(2.3±1.1)×10-23  GeV can explain how maximal θ23 mixing observed at 295 km by T2K appears to be nonmaximal at longer baselines. As shown recently by R. Oliveira, the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein matter effect for neutrinos is altered by decoherence: in normal (inverted) mass hierarchy, a resonant enhancement of νμ(ν¯μ)→νe(ν¯e) occurs for 6 Show more

“…refs. [16,18,19]. In this work we will show that the reference value for γ 23 considered in [17] is indeed already excluded by IceCube data (we note however that, according to the latest results reported by NOvA, the significance of the tension has been reduced to less than 1σ [3]).…”

“…In this work we study one of the possible windows to NP, the so-called quantum decoherence in neutrino oscillations, and update the existing bounds by analyzing IceCube and DeepCore data on atmospheric neutrinos. In particular, we are interested in a kind of decoherence effects in neutrino oscillations studied, for example, in [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] and, more recently, in [14][15][16][17][18][19]. These decoherence effects differ from the standard decoherence caused by the separation of wave packets (see e.g.…”

“…In this section we are going to show sensitivity analyses considering neutrino oscillations with decoherence in matter given by Eq. (14). We first show how each oscillation channel is sensible to decoherence by calculating the event rates, and then we establish DUNE sensitivities to the decoherence parameters.…”

“…Decoherence effects, in the framework of open systems or the Lindblad equation, have been considered in the recent neutrino physics literature in a variety of contexts [10][11][12][13][14], and in specific settings such as IceCube [15], DUNE [16], and long base line experiments [17,18]. It has also been considered for their possible relevance in connection with quantum gravitational effects [19], and the question of CPT symmetry and the Dirac vs Majorana nature of neutrinos [20,21].…”
