Decoding Plant–Environment Interactions That Influence Crop Agronomic Traits

Abstract: To ensure food security in the face of increasing global demand due to population growth and progressive urbanization, it will be crucial to integrate emerging technologies in multiple disciplines to accelerate overall throughput of gene discovery and crop breeding. Plant agronomic traits often appear during the plants' later growth stages due to the cumulative effects of their lifetime interactions with the environment. Therefore, decoding plant–environment interactions by elucidating plants' temporal physiol… Show more

“…The phenome is the complete phenotypic representation of a species ( Mahner and Kary, 1997 ), and phenomics is the study of the phenome ( Freimer and Sabatti, 2003 ). Phenomics is being emphasized as an important tool for the management and genetic improvement of crops ( Mochida et al, 2020 ; Yang et al, 2020 ) and livestock ( Koltes et al, 2019 ). As the preceding paragraphs make apparent, there is a large collection of phenotypes describing the ability of both the embryo to establish pregnancy and the female to support that pregnancy.…”

“…7 ). 122 124 ) We combined the advantages of existing automated platforms to construct the RIKEN Integrated Plant Phenotyping System (RIPPS) with automated weighing and watering stations and continuous rotation of plants during the experiment to unify growth conditions. 125 ) Two major benefits of this system are (1) the microenvironmental conditions experienced by individual plants are homogenized and (2) additional imaging devices can be easily set to any position.…”

“…The analysis of plant growth under water‐deficit conditions is important for understanding plant responses to drought stress at the whole‐plant level. Toward this, imaging and information technologies have been developed based on artificial intelligence (Dhondt et al, 2013 ; Mochida et al, 2020 ; Singh et al, 2016 , 2021 ). Furthermore, quantitative phenotyping enables the analysis of physiological plant responses and assessment of plant water‐use efficiency and drought resistance not only under controlled growth conditions, but also in the greenhouse and field (Singh et al, 2021 ).…”
