Show more

“…No positivity occurred in the current study and it should be emphasized that infection by the virus is in sharp decline according to studies of blood donors in Uberaba, Minas Gerais which assessed the prevalence of HTLV-I and II between 1995 and 2008. The prevalence for 1995-2000 was 0.6%, whereas it declined to 0.1% during the 2002-2008 period (27) .…”

“…Later on, blood bank screening was applied in developing countries with medium to high seroprevalence among blood donors (Argentina: 2004, Peru: 1999). This policy proved to be successful to decrease HTLV-1 spread by blood transfusion [300304]. Unfortunately, official screening programs still lack in other regions with high prevalence (Middle East) [305,306], further reflecting differences between industrialized and developing countries.…”

“…Any inference about a possible increase in the prevalence of HTLV-1/2 in Manaus is limited by the rarity of the event and the relative small sample size of the 1997 study. However, it is reasonable to assume that the prevalence of HTLV-1/2 in Manaus has not decreased as has been observed in other locations, including Brazil and Japan 8,14,15 . The decreased HTLV-1/2 observation rate is likely due to increased specifi city of diagnostic tests, which has led to the reduction in the proportion of false positives, or a real reduction in the transmission rate of the disease in populations with better access to education and prevention initiatives administered by the public health services.…”
