Declining Rotation Curves at z = 2 in ΛCDM Galaxy Formation Simulations

Abstract: Selecting disk galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation Magneticum Pathfinder we show that almost half of our poster child disk galaxies at z = 2 show significantly declining rotation curves and low dark matter fractions, very similar to recently reported observations. These galaxies do not show any anomalous behavior, reside in standard dark matter halos and typically grow significantly in mass until z = 0, where they span all morphological classes, including disk galaxies matching present da… Show more

“…This relation, therefore, provides a new independent measure of the dark matter mass, that can be used together with other stellar and gas kinematic tracers to properly test the current ΛCDM model (e.g. Bradford et al 2016;Brooks et al 2017;Teklu et al 2018). Though powerful, Equations 1 or 2 are not easy to apply to observational data because in extragalactic observations it is still hard to disentangle the kinematics of the thin stellar discs from those of the thick counterparts.…”

“…We conclude by noting that our finding of a flat rotation curve may not be inconsistent with the conclusions of Lang et al (2017). The majority of disk galaxies in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations by Teklu et al (2018) exhibit flat rotation curves with only 38% hosting declining rotation curves. Lang et al (2017) split their data out into two subsamples according to the degree of pressure support, one with V rot /σ 0 > 6.3 and the other < 6.3.…”

“…When combined with a light profile and a mass-to-light ratio, one may estimate the distribution of dark matter in a galaxy (e.g. Carignan & Freeman 1985;van Albada et al 1985;Kassin et al 2006;de Blok et al 2008;Korsaga et al 2018).…”

“…In particular, the amount of dark matter fraction within the stellar half-mass radius has been shown to be strongly dependent on the implementation of feedback processes (e.g. Wu et al 2014;Remus et al 2017;Teklu et al 2018). For example, different simulations (e.g.…”
