Declining Prevalence of Tobacco Smoking in Vietnam

Abstract: Smoking prevalence is declining in recent cohorts of men, and continues to decline in successive cohorts of women, possibly in response to anti-tobacco initiatives commencing in the 1990s. Low proportions of quitters mean that Vietnamese smokers accumulate high exposures despite moderate quantities of cigarettes smoked per day.

“…A recent assessment [ 7 ] is that the GPAQ has only poor to fair criterion validity but nonetheless was considered a suitable and acceptable instrument for monitoring the PA of populations. Similar conclusions specifically for the Vietnamese population were reached in a study [ 9 ] conducted in the highly urbanised province of HCMC, even though the validity of the instrument in rural Vietnam, where 70% of the population lives and educational standards are lower [ 11 ], is untested.…”

“… 17 18 In Vietnam, the prevalence of smoking has declined among both women and men over the last decades. 19 Similarly, as a result of implementing several nutrition and vaccination programmes, the rate of malnutrition has declined and the rate of vaccination has increased. 5 Therefore, we hypothesise that atmospheric pollution may play a role in the risk of hospitalisation for pneumonia, as seen in Hong Kong, 20 given the high concentrations reported for Hanoi.…”

“…In 2015, in the STEPS-GATS combined survey, the prevalence of tobacco use was 45.3% among men, 1.1% among women, and 22.5% overall for both sexes [5]. The comparison of the two STEPS surveys led to the conclusion that the prevalence of smoking was declining in recent cohorts of men and continued to decline in successive cohorts of women [6].…”
