Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi ajustar a curva crítica de diluição do nitrogênio (N) da batata 'Asterix' e avaliar o seu emprego no manejo da adubação nitrogenada. Tubérculos dessa cultivar foram plantados em sacolas de polietileno com 5 dm 3 de substrato orgânico, na densidade de 4,4 sacolas m -2 . Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco soluções nutritivas, com concentrações de N de 5, 8,3, 11,3, 14,3 , complementados por micronutrientes. Em intervalos de sete dias, entre os 43 e 99 dias após o plantio, foram determinados: a massa de matéria seca (MS) e o teor de N nas folhas, hastes e tubérculos. Foi ajustada a curva crítica de diluição [N (g kg -1 ) = 36MS -0.37 ] para a produção total de MS da planta. Essa curva pode ser usada, como referencial, na interpretação dos resultados de análise foliar e na estimativa das quantidades de N extraídas pelas plantas da batata 'Asterix', no decorrer do ciclo de crescimento e desenvolvimento.Termos para indexação: Solanum tuberosum, alometria, adubação, massa de matéria seca. Critical nitrogen dilution curve of the potato cultivar AsterixAbstract -The objective of this work was to adjust the critical nitrogen (N) dilution curve of the potato cultivar Asterix and to evaluate its use on N management strategies. Tubers of this cultivar were planted in 5 dm 3 polyethylene bags filled with organic substrate in the density of 4.4 bags m -2 . Treatments consisted of five nutrient solutions with N concentrations of 5, 8.3, 11.3, 14.3, and 16.3 mmol L -1 . Other macronutrients as 8.3 of K + , 1.75 of Ca 2+ , 1,2 of H 2 PO 4 -, 0.7 of Mg 2+ , 0.7 mmol L -1 of SO 4 2-and micronutrients were added in standard concentrations. Dry matter and N concentration in leaves, stems and tubers were weekly determined, from 43 to 99 days after planting. The critical nitrogen curve [N (g kg -1 ) = 36DM -0.37 ] was adjusted, based on total dry matter production. This dilution curve may be used as an interpretation tool for foliar analysis results and as a parameter to estimate N extraction during growth and development of the potato cultivar Asterix.

Nitrogen concentration in dry matter of the fifth leaf during growth of greenhouse tomato plants

The nitrogen concentration in dry matter of the fifth leaf during growth of a greenhouse tomato crop was determined. Plants of hybrid Monte Carlo were grown in 4.5 L bags, using a commercial substrate, in a plant density of 3.3 plants m-2. A nutrient solution containing, in mmol L-1: KNO3, 4.0; K2SO4, 0.9; Ca(NO3)2, 3.75; KH2PO4, 1.5; MgSO4, 1.0; iron chelate 19. 10³, was used as reference. Microelements were added by a commercial mixture. The T3 treatment was equal to the reference nutrient solution, whereas in treatments T1, T2, T4 and T5 quantities of all nutrients from T3 were multiplied by 0.25, 0.50, 1.25 and 1.50, respectively. In each treatment, the volume of 1 L of nutrient solution was supplied to each plant once a week by fertigation. Periodically destructive measurements were made from anthesis to ripening of the first truss, to determine dry matter and N concentration in shoot and in fifth leaf tissues, counted from the apex to the bottom of the plant. Five dilution curves were fitted from data of N concentration in the fifth leaf and shoot dry matter accumulation during growth of plants. A general relationship was adjusted between actual N concentration in shoot (Nt) and in the fifth leaf (Nf): Nt = 1.287 Nf (R² = 0.80). This relationship could be used to estimate the N status of plants by means of a nitrogen nutrition index (NNI), from analysis of the fifth leaf sap.

Response of nitrogen dynamics in semi-natural and agricultural grassland soils to experimental variation in tide and salinity

In the framework of rehabilitation efforts to enhance the ecological value of closed-off estuaries, we studied the effects of restoring a tidal movement and seawater incursion on soil nitrogen conversion rates and vegetation response of semi-natural and agricultural grasslands in an outdoor mesocosm experiment. Intact soil monoliths including vegetation were collected in June 2004 on two locations on the shores of the Haringvliet lagoon in the southwestern part of the Netherlands, which used to be a well-developed estuary before closure in 1970. For more than 1 year, soil monoliths were continuously subjected to a full-factorial combination of tidal treatment [stagnant/tidal (0.20 m amplitude)] and water type [(freshwater, oligohaline (salinity = 3)]. Soil, soil moisture and water nitrogen concentrations were monitored for a year, as well as vegetation response and nitrogen conversion rates in the soil. As expected, nitrogen mineralization rates were enhanced by the tidal treatment in comparison with the stagnant treatment. Denitrification rates however, were much less affected by tide and were even lower in the tidal treatments after 3 months in the agricultural grassland soils, implying that in general, soils were more oxic in the tidal treatments. Oligohaline treatments had virtually no effect on soil nitrogen conversion rates compared to freshwater treatments. Vegetation performance, however, was lower under saline conditions, especially in the semi-natural grassland. No further significant differences in response to the tidal and oligohaline treatments were found between the two soils although they differed strongly in soil characteristics. We conclude that if the rehabilitation measures in the former Haringvliet estuary are carried out as planned, drastic changes in soil nitrogen processes and vegetation composition will not occur.
