Decker‐Becker Secondary Amine Synthesis

Abstract: The synthesis of secondary amine by the condensation of primary amines with aldehydes to form an imine intermediate, which then reacts with alkyl halides via alkylation to finally afford secondary amines after hydrolysis, is generally referred to as Decker‐Becker secondary amine synthesis and also known as Forster reaction. The study finds that use of methyl halides gives satisfactory results. This reaction has been used in the preparation of secondary amines, such as alkyl (aryl) methyl amines.
