Decision support systems in manufacturing: a survey and future trends

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to propose a theoretical decision support framework, which integrates artificial intelligence (AI), discrete-event simulation (DES) and database management technologies so as to determine the steady state flow of items (e.g. fixtures, jigs, tools, etc.) in manufacturing. Design/methodology/approach The existing literature was carefully reviewed to address the state of the arts in decision support systems (DSS), the shortcomings of pure simulation-based and pure AI-based DSS. A concept… Show more

“…The objective of normalization is to transform how something is measured into a single dimensionless number. Decision Support System (DSS) are interactive computer-based systems that use the data, models, documents, knowledge and communication technologies required to support people who are needed to solve complex problems [16]. DSS has been one of the most attractive research topics since its inception in the early 1970s and faced a number of challenges due to rapid development and innovation in the field of information technology.…”

“…In this case, the simple use of ML techniques for data analysis may not always be sufficient to achieve the best results, being necessary to be combined with simulation capabilities. However, there are recent studies that show several limitations in the use of pure AI or simulations approaches for producing knowledge for decision-support [55]. The main problem with a mixed approach is the difficulty in the integration of the simulation models with AI techniques.…”

“…However, their results were not conclusive because they lacked data on "inter-individual learning rate variability in assembly work". Kasie et al [11], undertook a literature review on decision support systems within modelling and simulation studies. They developed a framework that incorporated artificial intelligence, decision support system database and simulation.…”
