Decision Support Systems and Processes for Groundwater

Abstract: Information and knowledge management challenges abound in groundwater sciences. Groundwater problems of interest to society are characteristically complex and exceed our ability to solve them without the aid of computational analysis. Yet discipline specific problems that are of interest to hydrogeologists frequently do not directly address the immediate decision making needs of policy makers, groundwater managers, and stakeholders. It is the immediate societal needs that drive the demand for science-based inf… Show more

“…However, evidence suggests that the opposite is true and that the inclusion of participatory processes is critical to effective groundwater governance as it ensures that a broad range of interests, knowledge, and perspectives are considered, shared, and understood (Holley and Sinclair, 2013;Jakeman et al, 2016). Participatory processes that combine scientific knowledge of biophysical processes with stakeholder perspectives, preferences, and concerns are well suited to address many of the challenges inherent in groundwater governance (Pierce et al, 2016).…”

“…For these process to gain legitimacy, they must emerge from an iterative, collaborative, and bidirectional exchange of information between stakeholders (Elshall et al, 2020). Such engagement processes generate opportunities to address misconceptions about the science content, establish a shared learning environment, and increase the likelihood of adoption of effective groundwater management solutions (Pierce et al, 2016).…”

“…To address such challenge, there are few decision support systems (DSS) based model which are computational system that uses data and models interactively to aid in the formulation, analysis, and selection of management strategies (Pierce, 2016). Sophocleous and Ma (1998) provided one of the earliest groundwater DSS that evaluates the impact of salt water intrusion on aquifer yield and Janža MA (2015) suggest DSS for emergency response to groundwater resource pollution in an urban area.…”
