Decision Support for the Design and Operation of Variable Speed Pumps in Water Supply Systems

Abstract: The design and operation of water supply systems is a multicriteria task: the energy efficiency should be minimized while, at the same time, respecting technical requirements, such as the balanced operation of available pumps. On one hand, the overall system can be improved by the use of variable speed pumps. They increase the number of operating options. On the other hand, they add more complexity to the operation problem. In this paper, we discuss the difficulties associated with speed control and propose a … Show more

“…Relaxation methods with piecewise linear underes- 2013, Misener and Floudas (2014). Besides these multi-purpose implementations, these methods can also be used to improve the solution process for domain specific optimization models, like for example shown by Pecci et al (2019) in the domain of water supply networks. The authors derived global bounds on the placement of valves by using a Branch-and-Bound algorithm with relaxed nonlinear constraints.…”

“…A large part of the instances have a gap > ε, which is why a comparison of the gap at the end of the computation time is performed. As in Pecci et al (2019), the share of solved instances with a gap smaller δ, ρ(δ) = (# instances with gap ≤ δ)/(# test instances), is plotted for the remaining gap δ, cf. Fig.…”

“…Cabrera et al [18] claims that in EU the improvement of the pumping water systems can achieve 20-30% of energy consumption reduction. Nowak et al [19] furtherly contributed to the optimization of pumping systems, describing an optimization method for variable speed pumps and the achieved energy savings. In addition, Annus et al [20] studied the electricity savings with the application of Variable Speed Drives (VSD's) and the variation of a water system flow rate related to the circulation pumps in domestic household systems.…”

“…However, this concept is quite complex to apply in water networks because there are many head systems as demand consume varies. In a similar way, Nowak et al [32] presented an optimization process using VSPs with different constraints in operational controls. There could be different pumping configurations with FSPs and VSPs for pumping stations in water networks.…”
