In institutional social work, decision-making is a core task that increasingly involves more than one professional as well as, frequently, the clients. Group decision-making is fundamentally different from individual decision-making in that it is an inherently social activity calling for the communicative competencies of those involved. In this article, we describe group decision-making procedures for a specific setting of German child welfare. Condensing our findings into an idealised model of decision-making, we attempt to show how communicative and interactive exigencies conflict with decision-making rationalities. We go on to discuss the consequences this conflict has on the participation of clients in the decision-making process, arguing that social workers are likely to address both rationales separately. We show that accordingly, participation in the interaction does not necessarily safeguard a partaking in the decision.

This study aimed to examine the factors that influence the decision-making of social workers through their professional experience. The qualitative research method and case study design were employed in this study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with a total of twenty participants and the data obtained has been descriptive analyzed. Eight key elements have been identified that have an impact on the participants’ decision-making process. The chief elements of social workers’ included: descriptions, assessment phase, previous experiences, worldviews and ideologies, education, professional experiences and practice, exchanging ideas with their colleagues, and their own institutional and non-institutional expectations. Emotions and culture also form the social worker’s professional decision. The mentioned factors are a rule rather than an exception and these factors make it difficult for the social worker to develop rational decisions. To prevent these effects, the social worker should be aware of the transition between personal and professional values and take the responsibility to deal with them.

In this study we examine how suitability for adoptive parenthood is assessed and displayed in interactions between social workers and prospective adoptive parents. In particular, we have analyzed relationship questions that are put to couples with and without an observation from the social worker. The answers are featured as very precise, stressing the positive aspects of the relationship but avoiding sainthood, and accompanied with examples that illustrate the stability of the relationship. We concluded that it is not only ''what'' couples answer but also ''how'' they answer that is taken into account in the assessment. That is why ''being able to finish o¤ each other's sentences when giving an answer'' and ''having the ability to reflect on the relationship'' is considered to be a protective factor for adoptive parenthood.
