Decision-Making and Tactical Behavior with Potential Fields

Abstract: Using potential-fields is a seldomly used technique in RoboCup scenarios. The existing approaches mainly concentrate on world state representation on single actions such as a kick. In this paper we will show how to apply potential fields to assist fast and precise decisions in an easy and intuitive way. We go beyond the existing approaches in using potential fields to determine all possible player actions, basic and advanced tactics an also general player behaviors. To ensure fast computing we mainly use basic… Show more

“…This division is due to the fact that not all the decisions necessarily lead to a physical action or reaction whereas there are decisions for higher levels of intelligence [8]. Having said that, in the proposed system the decisions leading to a physical action are called lowlevel decisions and all other decisions are called high-level decisions.…”

“…There is a rich selection of behaviour types that the agent can select from, which depend on the tactics and strategic characteristics, and also on the agent's role in a formation, position of the ball and the other players. A description can be found in reference [82]. A detailed analysis of multi-agent decision making is however beyond the scope of this paper, see references [83] and [84].…”

“…Potential field based team control is also popular outside of the SSL, in the mid-size [34], simulation [27] and Sony AIBO legged leagues [20]. Potential fields are used to determine target field positions for moving, or kicking.…”
