Decision Making And Systems Thinking: Educational Issues

Abstract: Decision making in most universities is taught within the conventional OR/MS (Operations Research/Management Science) paradigm.  This paradigm is known to be “hard” since it is consisted of mathematical tools, and normally suitable for solving structured problems. In complex situations the conventional OR/MS paradigm proves to be inadequate; decisions must be based on systems thinking which provides the decision maker(s) the opportunity to address the problematic situation in its full system context. The aim h… Show more

“…The stake of this research is that all these critical issues should be duly embedded in the programme designed to address emerging situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the distribution of palliatives. The adoption of learning tradition among stakeholders’ groups can enhance continuous improvement drive that can yield better results in the long run (Yurtseven & Buchanan, 2016 ).…”

“…2015). SST-based approaches are more promising in complex situations giving the managers the opportunity to describe the problem in its full systemic context (Yurtseven and Buchanan 2016). Moreover, according to Maani and Maharaj (2004) understanding systemic structures that underline organizational dynamics is a crucial prerequisite for the development of robust strategies.…”

“…The underlying assumption in such mathematically modelled instances has been strongly built on well-defined structures of systems. However, as systems become more complex, managing them and designing relevant decision making processes become more challenging (Yurtseven & Buchanan, 2016).…”
