Deciphering the distribution of the savanna biome

Abstract: Summary• We aimed to identify the limits of savanna across Africa, Australia and South America. We based our investigation on the rich history of hypotheses previously examined: that the limits of savanna are variously determined by rainfall, rainfall seasonality, soil fertility and disturbance.• We categorized vegetation on all continents as 'savanna' (open habitats with a C 4 grass layer) or 'not-savanna' (closed habitats with no C 4 grass layer) and used a combination of statistical approaches to examine ho… Show more

“…These communities, referred to as Cu-Co clearings, represent old growth grasslands (Veldman et al 2015) that require centuries to assemble and are characterized by a diversity of herbaceous species and forbs, and are maintained by fire and edaphic factors that limit tree growth (Bond and Parr 2010;Lehmann et al 2011;Parr et al 2014;Veldman et al 2015). In Cu-Co ecosystems, plant communities and associated endemic species are distributed along a soil metal concentration gradient ).…”

“…The last decade has seen a revolution in our understanding of the evolution [17,24,25], antiquity [26 -28], distribution [29,30] and ecosystem dynamics of TGBs [14,31], as well as their role in the global carbon cycle [32]. Some of these advances have sparked controversies that are now active debates in the literature (e.g.…”
