There is a gap between the importance of certain archeological material sources and their perception, both by professionals and by the general public. Textiles, for example, are essential to understanding practices that marked daily life and rituals in the past, but they have often been extremely degraded over time, particularly in temperate climates. As a result, museums often choose not to display this material to the public. Research teams themselves find it difficult to work with such altered and fragmentary materials. Design could provide new means of visualization and presentation and contribute to the intelligibility of these finds. However, the development of suitable media by designers requires a good understanding of the underlying physicochemistry. Here we describe an interdisciplinary teaching initiative based on a doctoral project, the Archaeological Textile project studio, which we ran with design students. The studio was supervised by an educator team consisting of two chemists and two professional designers, with the participation of external scientists from research and cultural institutions. Seventeen projects were developed by 23 students from the first to the fourth academic year (L1 to M1). We discuss this initiative from the point of view of chemical education, as an original example of training higher education students who are not chemists using a project-based approach.

In this paper, we propose SpectralNeRF, an end-to-end Neural Radiance Field (NeRF)-based architecture for high-quality physically based rendering from a novel spectral perspective. We modify the classical spectral rendering into two main steps, 1) the generation of a series of spectrum maps spanning different wavelengths, 2) the combination of these spectrum maps for the RGB output. Our SpectralNeRF follows these two steps through the proposed multi-layer perceptron (MLP)-based architecture (SpectralMLP) and Spectrum Attention UNet (SAUNet). Given the ray origin and the ray direction, the SpectralMLP constructs the spectral radiance field to obtain spectrum maps of novel views, which are then sent to the SAUNet to produce RGB images of white-light illumination. Applying NeRF to build up the spectral rendering is a more physically-based way from the perspective of ray-tracing. Further, the spectral radiance fields decompose difficult scenes and improve the performance of NeRF-based methods. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate the proposed SpectralNeRF is superior to recent NeRF-based methods when synthesizing new views on synthetic and real datasets. This work presents a study on the structure of a bronze mirror found in the Akterek burial complex by using neutron radiography and tomography. The manufacturing features and the physical state of this mirror was analyzed by three-dimensional model. It turned out that the rim on the edge was made of a different alloy, and the border between the rim and the base of the mirror is also visually visible. The morphological features and spatial distribution of pores and voids formed during secondary casting with the application of various patterns and ornaments have been studied in detail. The neutron tomography data made it possible to study the remains of a thin layer of corrosion on the surface of the mirror.
